Who can register .uk domains?

.uk domain names are registered on a first-come, first-served basis. which means that anyone can register one. If you already have a .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk domain name and you registered it before 10th June 2014, .uk domain name may already have been reserved for you. I want to register example.uk and whois lookup shows it is available for registration, but the registration failed. Why?

Registrants who own an existing *.uk third level domain names before Oct. 28, 2013 will have their .uk domain name reserved for free until June 10, 2019.

  • The right to register a new .uk domain name falls to an equivalent qualifying .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk domain name registered prior to October 28, 2013. When there's more than one equivalent domain, the right will fall in order of priority: .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk. Only Owners of the qualifying domains will have the right to register the .uk domain name until June 10, 2019.
  • After June 10, 2014 any new registrations of co.uk, org.uk, me.uk, net.uk, plc.uk or ltd.uk domain names no longer get rights to reserve the new .uk domain. These new .uk domains are registered on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If no corresponding third level *.uk domain exists, .uk domain name can be registered by anyone.
  • If an existing qualifying domain is not renewed, all rights to new .uk domains will not be available any more.

How do I transfer my .uk domain name to you?

The .uk transfer process is different from other TLDs. There is no AUTH code and approval email required.

To transfer your .uk domain name to us, you only need to do the following:

  • Place a transfer order on our website.
  • Contact your current registrar and request an IPS tag change.

The IPS Tag change has to be made through your current domain registration provider. If you are unable to contact your current provider you can contact Nominet which is the UK organization that issues UK domain names to make the change for you. The transfer completes immediately after IPS tag change is made.
